I did it! I finished Voltaire and the last book on my list for my library challenge! I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to do it because about midway through Candide, I got bored. Candide is really optimistic all the damn time. And not to mention so moral! In the end, despite all his hardships and troubles he marries the woman that he loved even though he didn't want to anymore because she was ugly from doing so much hard labor and having a really tough life.

It was almost like the weirdest blind date story ever. But I'm done! I can pleasure read to my hearts content and not have anything hanging over me! Not that I haven't been pleasure reading too. I think I currently have 9 books check out from the library and I got an e-mail this morning from the library telling me that I have another book ready to be picked up. And I think I'm on the waiting list for at least 5 or 6 more books!

Right now I'm also reading The Maze Runner by James Dashner. It's considered a young adults book. My sister (who's 14) recommended it to me and said that my dad was reading it too so I figured I'd give it a try. I like it. The characters are interesting and the concept of being placed somewhere with no memory of who you are, where you came from or what you're doing there is intriguing for me. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book and I can't wait to see what happens.

Now that Candide is done I need a new book for my lunch time reading at work. I don't want anything that is too heavy or mentally taxing, that's what my job does. I want something that is going to be an easy read, something that I can sit outside and enjoy or just avoid the world at my desk with. I can't wait to pick through the pile of library books at home and pick a new one!

Ok people! I'm reading it! Candide by Voltaire. It's the last book of my library challenge. So far...Candide is very optimistic despite being tossed out of his home and losing his true love, then hearing from his master that his true love was raped and killed, then find out she is alive and being reunited and then murdering someone and then being forced to separate from his love again. This poor guy has been through a lot. Can't wait to see how it ends.

I actually finished something! Seems like it's been a while since I finished anything.

These are my first socks in cotton. I like the stitch definition and the color. I would use it again. Also this is the first time I've used this brand of sock yarn. I broke my resolution of not buying any sock yarn this year until I used up everything I already had in my stash but I have a good excuse! A new yarn shop opened recently in Mid-town and the hubbs and I stopped in to check it out. It's a very small shop called Fig Tree Alley and I had to support a local yarn shop! The lady running the shop was very nice and I enjoyed my visit very much. I figured one skein of sock yarn was worth buying to help keep her shop going.

I decided to move on with my Top 10 Banned Novels reading and just skip reading the book by Voltaire. I'm just not into reading anything that heavy right now. Work has been really stressful and home has been really stressful so I'm going to go on to reading something else for a while. I'm going to keep the list on the side bar in case I decide to come back to it later in the year.

I read Pride and Prejudice and Monsters and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter and am currently reading The Long Walk, The true story of a trek to freedom by Slavomir Rawicz. Hopefully the library comes through today with a couple of more books I requested. Hubbs and I are headed off to Lake Tahoe this weekend for a friends wedding so I'm going to need some reading material and The Long Walk is almost finished.

I cast on for a new pair of socks yesterday and I'm still working on my Thermal. I'm doing the placket on the front right now and for some reason I seem to have a block on finishing this part which is why I've gone back to making socks. I still need to finish the sleeves for my Central Park Hoodie but haven't made any progress on that either. I know this weekend won't be very restful but I'm hoping for at least some down time to relax by the lake before we head back home. I have knitting that needs to be done!

So I went ahead and requested 3 books from the library, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter & Pride, Prejudice and Zombies both by Seth Grahame-Smith and Candide by Voltaire. The first two aren't exactly on my list of 10 Banned but I need some reading that won't tax my brain right now. I'm still all messed up things went crazy at my house and I haven't been able to find my rhythm yet. I saw Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter at the Atlanta Airport when I was desperately trying to find something to read on the plane and was caught between that and Dean Koontz Lightening. I went with Dean Koontz because I'd read some of his stuff before and liked it and I figured it was safer to go with the known then the unknown in this case. It was a good thing I did since was sat for an hour and a half on the tarmac in Atlanta while they de-iced the plane. I don't think I'll have time to pick up my books today but I'm going to give it a shot of hitting the library tomorrow after work. I can't wait to dive into Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Should be interesting.

Back in October my office moved from a Satellite location to our headquarters office. Yesterday we found out that we are moving back to the office we came from. Seems like a terrible waste of resources to me but whatever. I just got used to working down here and riding the train into work and now I'm back to having to drive myself to work. I've gotten so spoiled here! My husband drives me to the train, I ride the train which drops me off a block and a half from the office, I walk to the office. No worries about trying to find a place to park or being late due to traffic. Now I have to drive myself! The hard part is that I don't have a car right now, so this is going to take some figuring out from Hubbs and I. But we'll make it work. The office should move in about a month. I just hope that they don't have me in charge of the move again. Last time it was a major pain in the butt and everyone second guessed me at every turn. So annoying but since the main person who did that is no longer with the unit, it shouldn't be so bad this time.

Is it really the middle of March already? Ugh. I feel so behind in everything right now. I have two weeks worth of clean laundry piled up on my dinning room table, I still haven't photographed any of my recent finished objects, none of my current works of...art are moving a long quickly, I haven't even begun any Christmas knitting and I'm feeling totally over whelmed by the need to plan three trips.

Hubbs and I are headed to Tahoe for a couple of days for a friends wedding in April, May is a cross country trip to Atlanta that includes driving a moving van back to California with a stop in Arizona and June is a trip to see my family in Oregon. It's going to be a crazy few months. At least the Tahoe trip is going to be easy. We're taking the 5th wheel and the dogs and camping out. It's way cheaper this way and we get to take the dogs with us. Poor little beasties have been abandoned by me lately. Between work and being gone for week, I don't think they thought I was coming back. They sure stuck to me like glue for a couple of days after I got back from Alabama.

I've been making some progress on my Thermal Sweater. I finished the first sleeve and am about a third of the way through the second sleeve. I can't wait to finish it and wear it before the hot weather sets in and it's too hot. I haven't been working on anything besides the Thermal. The sleeves for the Central Park Hoodie are on hold right now. For whatever reason I'm just not feeling the vibe I need to redo them in a timely manner. I've got a pair of socks on the needles too but I need to rip them out and restart them. I think they are going to be way too small on the current needle size. Note to self: This is why we swatch! Duh!

I decided to finish my Administration of Justice degree while I was gone to Alabama. My cousin takes classes on-line from a local Junior College and after some research I discovered that they offer the classes I need to complete my degree. My last year of school, back in 2004, I had to drop two of my classes because working full time, going to school full and and trying to buy a house that was not where I lived was just too over whelming for me. So I finished the year 6 units shy of my AA. Silly me, I never looked into classes after I moved and there fore never finished. So stupid consider that 6 unit's is only 2 classes! Right now I'm planning to take one class this summer and the last class in the fall semester. So potiently I could be done with my AA by the end of the year! I'm really excited about it.

I'm saving up my money right now to get a laptop. Hubbs and I have a desk top but it's in our main living area where the kitchen and family room is. We only have 1 tv in our house so it's not fair of me to kick Hubbs outta there in order for me to be able to use the computer. My mom is giving us her wireless router so I'll be able to work from another room in the house while Hubbs is watching TV or using the desk top. This also means that we'll be able to take the computer with us on our two trips and I can study while we're gone.

About my self challenge to read The Top 10 Banned Books of all Time. I've been trying so hard to read Ulysses. I'm about 700 pages into this book and I don't understand any of it. I decided that I'm going give up on this book. I'm tired of forcing myself to try to read this book. It's just not me and I'm not enjoying it at all. All the other books I read were at least somewhat interesting if not really enjoyable so it wasn't like it was work. Reading Ulysses is work and not enjoyable at all. I think it's in my best interest to be honest with myself and admit that I'm not going to finish this book. I took it all the way to Alabama with my and back and didn't read a page. I haven't touched it since I got back almost 2 weeks ago either other then to renew it. Sorry James Joyce but I don't like your book. It's going back to the library as soon as my next book arrives.

The last book on the list is by Voltaire. I'm not sure I'm going to like this one either but I'm going to give it a shot. In the mean time I've read Lightening by Dean Koontz and The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. Lightening was good! I picked it up in the Atlanta airport and almost finished it before our flight landed in Sacramento. I would have finished it but my mom was yakking a lot and I figured I better enjoy the time talking to her, I can read later. My mom lent me The Last Song. Trust me on this...Do not read this book unless you want a tear jerker. It was so sad but good. I know I won't see the move because Miley Cryus's voice is just annoying to me but the book was good.

Well, I'm not sure I'm every going to finish Ulysses by James Joyce. This book is a really tough read and the first one that I've had to renew at the library. It's due back on the 23rd and I don't think I'm going to finish it by then. I'm slightly less then half way through. It's going to need a 2nd renew. This is the toughest book I think I've ever read and I rarely meet a book that I don't like in one way or another. It's just a tough read.

The formatting is weird, there's no quotation marks and the sentences are very choppy and hard to read. 90% of the time I'm not sure who's talking and this far (except for some not so nice comments about the queen of England) I'm not at all sure why this book was banned. From what I understand from my cube neighbor at work, apparently the main character, Mr. Bloom, has an affair but thus far, I've only read one mention of the mysterious lady and her letter that she wrote to Mr. Bloom. It seems like all Bloom does is walk around town and drink in pubs.

At this point I'm just hoping to finish this book soon! Hubbs keeps suggesting that I give up and move on to the next book, the final book. But I'm not sure I can except defeat. I really want to finish even though I don't really like the book or understand it. I decided that after this list is done I'm going to read the top 10 post apocalyptic books. It's a great list that includes Planet of the Apes, I am Legend & The Postman. I loved these movies and I'm sure the books will be even better, they usually are.

Finally! Moll Flanders is done and I can move on. It seems like it took forever to read this book. I didn't like the way it was written and it made for a very hard read. Now I'm moving on to Ulysses by James Joyce. I hope this one is a much easier read. !

I finished Madame Bovary Yesterday and picked up my next two Library books. I was able to get Moll Flanders and Ulysses. I choose Moll Flanders to read first because it is only 400 pages and Ulysses is over 1,000. I didn't get very far into it last night as I fell asleep really yearly. Normally I have a lot of trouble falling asleep at night and it usually takes at least an hour of reading before I feel sleepy but last night I was asleep in 15 min's.

Madame Bovary was an interesting book but I didn't really like the end. I felt bad for the woman even though it seems like most of her problems were her own fault. I really felt bad for her husband, who after her death discovered that she was an unfaithful woman. He morned her passing so much and it was so hard on him. Poor guy.

On the knitting front, I have finished the Heather Hoodie up to the point where I have to block the fronts and the backs. They are currently blocking and I'm hoping that they will be dry enough today that I can begin doing a three needle bind off on the shoulders to start the hood and the button bands and the short sleeves. This knit up so fast that I'm almost disappointed that I'm more then half way done. But I also can't wait to wear it! It's going to be so great for cold days when I'm working in the kitchen where I like to have my sleeves pushed up so nothing gets on them but I still need something to keep me warmer. Or when I'm working in my sewing room where it's always either chilly or steaming hot from having the bright lights, sewing machine and iron on.

My mom might be coming over this weekend with my Grandmother and my sister for some girls bonding time. I'm hoping that there will be enough time for my mom to give me some sewing lessons. I really want to learn to sew clothing but all those markings on the patterns are so confusing. I need some in site on what they all mean so I can learn to sew my own clothing. Last time I tried I think I was like 11 or 12 years old. Let's just say that it didn't go well then. I'm hoping that it will go better this time!

My next library book finally arrived on Tuesday, Madame Bovary. Not sure if I'm going to like this book or not. We'll have to wait and see. One thing I will say is that this challenge has led me to read books that I most likely would have never chosen on my own. Brave New World was definitely a departure from the rest of the books I've read so far and Lady Chatterley's Lover...I can see why they would have wanted to ban it when it first came out. But all in all, interesting books.

Madame Bovary is the seventh book from the list of Top 10 and not that I'm really coming near the end I'm wondering what I'm going to do for reading. I definitely going to keep using the library but I guess I'm going to have to find a new list to read off of. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! Being without a book is like being without air for me. I've been a night time reader for as long as I can remember. I always have a book, at least one, sometimes two that I'm reading.

I love books. The only book that I know I want to read that's not on the list is George Orwell's 1985. I've never read it and it's mentioned a lot when I'm reading about books. Don't know how this one escaped my notice but it won't go unread for long after the list is done.

I finished Lady Chatterley's Lover this morning. It's the 6th book out of the 10 on my list. It was a good book but I can see why it was banned in the '20's. There is a lot of imagery and swear words that Americans would not have liked at that time, most of which is pretty common place now. Over all it was a good book but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone because of the sexual imagery and the swear words.

I have three more books on request from the library and am just waiting for them to arrive. I requested Ulysses, Moll Flanders and Madame Bovary. I know it's the holidays and the library has been closed a lot but it seems like it's taking forever. I hope at least one of them arrives today so that I can pick it up after work. I hate not having a book and I hate having to read something else why I'm waiting for the next book to arrive. I keep checking my e-mail to see if they arrived. Thank goodness I can check it on my phone and I don't have to use the computer every time. If I did, I think Hubbs would kill me because I'd be constantly begging him to get off of it so I can check.

I finished my February Lady Sweater yesterday and wore it for most of the day. I took pictures but haven't gotten a chance to up load them yet. I also cast on for a new sweater on my new needles that Hubbs gave me for Christmas. He bought me a set of Harmony interchangeable circular needles that I was begging for. Thankfully he got them on sale so it was a bit more reasonable. They are just fantastic. They have nice sharp points which is great for working with bulky yarn and the joins are so smooth that you hardly notice they are there. With a lot of other needles I've noticed that you have to force the yarn over the join but with these it just glides over. I cast on for the Heather Hoodie Vest from the fall issue of Knitscene. So far I'm loving it but I've only got past the ribbing and am on the second round of the cable pattern. When I knitted up the swatch it was fantastic looking. The cables are really interesting and I can't wait to finish this project.

Heather Hoodie Vest by Debbie O'Neill

My library is so cool! I just found out that you can save a list of books that you want to read that way you don't have to go look them up when you're ready. They are already on the list and you can request them from the list. So very cool! Modern technology is best some times!

I have a bout 50 pages left in Uncle Tom's Cabin and then I'm moving on to Brave new world. This top 10 banned classics challenge is going to be really fun. I can't wait to move on to the next book. I've been bringing Uncle Tom's Cabin with me to work every day so I've been actually getting in a half hour of reading at work each day in addition to the reading I do at home at night. But the difference is that I don't' usually fall asleep while I'm reading at work. Ok, most of the time I don't fall asleep while I'm reading at work. It does happen that I doze off but only during my lunch break. And I always wake up before my break is over.

I've been knitting my fingers to the bone trying to finish Hubbs socks before the end of the year. I finished the 1st sock on Monday and cast on for the second, completing the cuff before it was bed time. Yesterday I got almost 2/3rds of the 2nd socks leg finished and am really hoping that I can finish it off this weekend. Not sure it that's going to happen or not since I do have Christmas stuff going on on Thursday night and Friday all day. Not sure what the plan is for Saturday and Sunday but I'm hoping that it includes knitting.

My back has been hurting me for some unknown reason since last weekend and now it's to the point where it hurts when I roll over at night and wakes me up. I'm living with it because what else can I do? But this morning was a total nightmare. After waking up every hour on the hour to roll over I'm awakened at quarter to 5 by the sound of Hubbs dog doing the puke noise IN OUR BED. Nothing wakes me up faster then the sound of an animal barfing. Ugh. Thankfully she didn't puke in the bed but she got the carpet in our bedroom and the carpet in the family room. I love that dog but sometimes I get so mad at her. Basically what caused her to vomit is that she chews up plastic that she finds God knows where in the yard and swallows the bits. Of course plastic in any ones stomach is not a good thing and she ends up puking. I wanted to kick her to Alaska this morning. But I refrained. Barely. By the time I finally got her out and all the puke and bits of plastic cleaned up Hubbs finally gets up and offers to help. I wanted to kick him to Alaska too but again, I refrained. Again, Barely. I love the man but good grief. I think it's just my lot in life to be the cleaner of puke at our house. At some point I'm going to have to accept it and quit fighting it. I hate being the cleaner of puke. Icky.

So anyway, hope your morning was better then mine. Now I'm off to work to see what kind of trouble I can get into there.

I'm now more then half way through Uncle Tom's Cabin and I'm really enjoying the book. It's hard to believe that this book was written during the time of slavery and by a free black woman. I guess the view I have of slavery in my mind is different then what she portrays in her book. The story line is great and it's interesting to see what happens to these poor people. Right now I'm just dying to find out if Uncle Tom does get to go back to the plantation where his wife and children are. Can't wait to see how it ends.

But knowing that I'm likely to finish this book very soon, I'm starting to think ahead to the next book. I have six books to choose from and I'm having a hard time deciding. My choices are Ulysses, Madame Bovery, Brave New World, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Moll Flanders and Candie. I don't really know anything about any of these books so I think I'm going to have to do some research to help me decide. Right now I'm leaning toward Brave New World just because I like the title. I know you shouldn't judge a book by the cover but what else do I have to go on right now?! lol

I cast on for another pair of socks in addition to the several other projects that I currently have on the needles. Hubbs actually asked for a pair of hand knitted socks, so I'm working on that for him. I took me a while to find a pattern that I thought wouldn't be too girly for him and that would have enough staying power that they wouldn't fall down if he wore them to work. I'm hoping to finish them before the end of the new year to bring my total for knitted socks to 19. My original goal was 12 so I think at 19 I'd pretty much accomplish my goal.

The only problem I have with knitting is that there are so many things that I want to knit and only so many hours in a day. If only I could afford to quit my job and knit all day.

This is my 100th post. My goal with the blog was to post once a week for the entire year. And while I didn't always post once a week I feel like I've made my goal since I did post 100 times (counting this one) and I still have a week to go before my blog-aversery. I started writing this on 12/31/08 and have been going strong for the last year. Out of the 10 or so goals I had for myself on 12/31 last year I think I've done well. I haven't stashed any yarn or fabric, I completed my sock challenge and I blogged. I think for me who never finishes anything has done pretty well.

So far my list for 2010 is as follows at this point: 1. Read all 10 books on the list of Top 10 Banned Books, 2. Learn to knit a toe up sock and 3. Knit something with Alpaca. My list is very short but I still have another week to decide (or not) to add something more to it. Hopefully I can come up with some more things because 3 things seems like an awfully short list to me. Is it sad that I can't come up with more things? I don't know but some times it's nice to have a short list instead of a long one that you know you wont be able to complete. So for now it's 3. Later it will be more.

Hubbs and I got to take off for the day yesterday and enjoy another day of snow wheeling. We headed off and meet up with some other club members and a few other friends for a day on Iron Mountain. The snow wasn't as great as it was last Monday but it was still a great day in the snow.

And then we got stuck. It was off camber and I have to admit that I got scared and had to get out. I'm really scared of the truck rolling over so when it gets off camber I get out.

I tried to ride Marlon's snow shovel down the hill since no one remembered to bring a sled for the kids (i.e. me).

The views were, of course, amazing.

And at the end of the day it was all topped off with a little lasagna, some garlic bread and some white wine.

It was a great day and I would have loved to stay out longer but as usual work got in the way. We had to come home and great ready for work today.

I'm still working on reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. I never seem to get more then 10 pages read before I drop off to sleep each night. I'm going to start taking the book to work with me so I can read it on the train in the morning and afternoon and also on my lunch breaks. Hopefully I can get a little further into the story. So far it's a great one. I'm not even 100 pages into it and all ready there has been a great escape by one of the main characters, Eliza. The other slaves and the lady of the farm are helping her escape by keeping the man that is looking for her off the roads by delaying his departure from the farm. Some of the hi jinks that the other slaves do to keep him from leaving is pretty funny. Seems like even though people at that time thought that slaves were stupid and unable to learn, these slaves are smarter then the slave hunter. They pull some pretty good practical jokes on him. Can't wait to see how it's going to turn out.

There has been knitting. I've finished up one sock and am about half way through the second sock. I'm sure I'll be posting up pictures of the 18th pair of socks that I've done this year.

Right now I'm also working on a list of things that I'd like to accomplish for the next year. The list is pretty short right now, but I'm hoping to have at least 5 things on the list before new years. I don't normally do new years resolutions but I think it's good for me to have a list of goals that I want to accomplish every year. Most of them are just for my personal betterment and are meant to challenge me. I never vow to lose weight (but it's always a goal) or to donate time or money. These are things I'd like to do but I need smaller goals. I like to think my list is also open ended. I can add goals as I go or decide that one isn't something that I want to pursue. I'll be sure to post my goals here. It helps keep me on track and honest about it, even though the only person I have to be honest about it with is myself.

I got it! Finally! The computers at the library finally came back on line yesterday and I was able to get my library card and the first book on my list of the Top Ten Banned Books. I choose Uncle Tom's Cabin by Herriet Beecher Stowe. The book is due back to the library on 12/30 and I'm hoping to finish it by then but if not, I'll have to renew it. I'm pretty excited about the book.

This last week has been a very eventful week so far. Monday we played hookie and went snow wheeling, Tuesday was Metallica (\m/, rock on baby!) and today we went out to lunch at BJ's Brewery. They brew their own beers and Hubbs and I got to try a couple of new beers. Hubbs likes the dark stuff and tried the Tatonka Stout and the PM Porter. I'm not much of a fan of dark beer so I went with Piranha Pale Ale and also tried a sample of the Nutty Brewnette. I think next time we go I'm going to get the Nutty Brewnette. It was really good but thick.

The beer was great and the food was awesome but the company was even better!

The food was sooo good at BJ's. I'd heard great things about it from friends but every time we go by there it's either packed or we're not hungry. We were actually headed to another restaurant when I suggested that we try it out. I figured it couldn't be that packed on a Wednesday at 1pm. Thankfully it wasn't packed. Hubbs got a BBQ steak sandwich that was really awesome. The beef was tender and the BBQ sauce was out of this world. Very tasty and tangy. I had the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo. The chicken was really tender and the sauce was very creamy. Every thing was great and our server was awesome.

The last three days have been really good but sadly I'm back at work today. It's a one day work week for me since tomorrow is a furlough day. On one hand I'm glad that I only have to work 4 days a week but on the other losing a 25% of my pay sucks. If and when they decide to go back to a 5 day work week I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm loving being off at 3:30 everyday and getting to spend more time at home but I'm going to miss having that extra day off. Not sure what I'm going to do when that day comes but for now, I'm enjoying spending more time at home with Hubbs and having 4 day work weeks.

First of all, isn't my local library cute?! It's the tiniest library I've ever seen. Super cute.

I know the question that's on everyones mind is whether or not I actually got the card. I didn't. But!!! I have a very good excuse. Their computers were down today so I have to come back. I'm hoping that they will be back up tomorrow otherwise I will have to wait until Friday to try again. I'm not sure I can wait that long!

In other good news, I took my car in to get a smog done on it today. I don't normally take it myself. One of the reasons that I got married was so that I wouldn't have to deal with automotive stuff or take out the trash. lol But really Hubbs normally takes care of this kind of thing for me since it stress me out really bad. Hubbs had to work late today so I had to handle it myself like a grown up girl. Thankfully my old girl passed her smog test with flying colors and now I can pay the state the crazy fees they charge to keep her on the road. Dang old DMV. But at least it's handled! Go me!

Ok Folks! I signed up to get a library card this morning. I will have to go to the library tomorrow to pick it up but I was able to request Uncle Tom's Cabin this morning. I can't wait to get it and start reading. It will be my first book in my challenge to read the top ten most banned books. I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait to get the book but I guess I'll have to check back to see if it's arrived at my local library. Hopefully it wont take too long. Other then high school kids that are required to read the book, I don't see this as a book that too many people will want to read. But I could be wrong. I haven't read it so I won't know until I do! I can't wait!

Is it weird that I'm so excited about a book? A really old book? Wait, why am I asking? I know I'm weird. ;)
